Loctite 648 Retaining Compound 50ml
Loctite 648 is a high-strength green anaerobic retaining compound engineered for maximum efficacy in the bonding of cylindrical fitting parts. This industrial-grade adhesive permanently locks components, preventing costly loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration. Whether you are securing gears and sprockets onto gearbox shafts or rotors on electric motor shafts, this premium retaining compound provides a robust, leak-proof seal on all metals—including specific difficult materials like passive substrates (such as stainless steel and plated surfaces).
Why Choose Loctite 648?
- High Strength Permanent Bond: Cures when confined in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces to prevent components from loosening and leaking under harsh mechanical conditions.
- Robust Substrate Compatibility: Delivers reliable curing performance on both active metals (e.g., mild steel) and passive substrates like stainless steel or plated finishes.
- Excellent Oil Tolerance: Tolerates minor surface contaminations from various industrial oils, such as cutting, lubrication, anti-corrosion, and protection fluids.
- Low Viscosity Performance: Features a low viscosity design ideal for close-fitting cylindrical assemblies that require deep, consistent penetration.
- Thermal Resiliency: Offers high temperature performance ranging from -65°F to 300°F (-54°C to 149°C) to withstand demanding operating environments.

Simple Application Instructions
- Clean: For optimal results, clean all internal and external surfaces with a LOCTITE® cleaning solvent and let dry. To accelerate cure speed or where large gaps are present, apply an activator and allow it to dry.
-
Apply:
- For Slip Fitted Assemblies: Apply adhesive around the leading edge of the pin and the inside of the collar, using a rotating motion during assembly to ensure good coverage.
- For Press Fitted Assemblies: Apply adhesive thoroughly to both bond surfaces and assemble at high press-on rates.
- For Shrink Fitted Assemblies: Coat the part to produce a smooth, even film. If heating the hub, coat the pin; if cooling the pin, coat the hub.
- Assemble: Assemble the parts and do not disturb them until sufficient handling strength is achieved. The formula will begin curing once confined between close-fitting metal surfaces in the absence of air.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Loctite 648 used for?
Loctite 648 is a high-strength anaerobic retaining compound designed for bonding cylindrical fitting parts. It is specifically formulated to prevent parts like gears, sprockets, and rotors from loosening or leaking due to heavy shock, continuous vibration, and thermal loading.
Can Loctite 648 be disassembled?
Yes. While it is a high-strength permanent adhesive, it can be removed with standard hand tools. If needed, apply localized heat to the assembly to approximately 250°C and disassemble components while they are still hot. Mechanical aids can be used if this temperature cannot be fully achieved.
Does Loctite 648 work on passive substrates?
Yes. Loctite 648 offers robust curing performance across both active metals (such as mild steel) as well as passive substrates, including stainless steel and plated surfaces, without requiring an activator in standard conditions.
Is Loctite 648 safe for all environments?
Loctite 648 is not recommended for use in pure oxygen and/or oxygen-rich systems, and it should not be selected as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidizing materials. It is also not normally recommended for use on plastic materials, where stress cracking could occur.
