Loctite 660 Retaining Compound 50ml
Loctite 660 Quick Metal Retaining Compound is a high-viscosity, silver anaerobic retaining compound engineered for maximum efficacy in bonding cylindrical fitting parts. This industrial-grade adhesive permanently restores correct fits on worn shafts, spun bearings, and damaged keyways, preventing costly equipment downtime and component failure caused by shock, vibration, and backlash. Whether you are securing worn bearing seats or splines and tapers, this premium retaining compound provides a robust, leak-proof seal on all close-fitting metal surfaces—including large bond gaps approaching 0.50 mm (0.02 in.).
Why Choose Loctite 660 Retaining Compound?
- Maximum Gap Filling Capacity: Specifically designed for bonding cylindrical fitting parts where bond gaps occur without the need for remachining, successfully filling gaps up to 0.50 mm.
- Extends Machinery Life: Enables the reliable re-use of worn bearing seats, keys, splines, tapers, or shims, saving significant replacement costs.
- Vibration and Shock Resistant: Cures to create a high shear strength bond (3335 psi) that completely prevents loosening and leakage under heavy mechanical stress.
- Ideal for Salvaging Heavy-Duty Parts: Perfect for slip-fitted, press-fitted, or shrink-fitted assemblies that have experienced surface wear or damage.
- Wide Operating Temperature Range: Maintains robust, stable performance across a broad temperature spectrum from -65°F up to 300°F.

Simple Application Instructions
- Clean: For optimal results, clean all internal and external surfaces with a LOCTITE® cleaning solvent and allow to dry completely. If the material is an inactive metal or the cure speed is too slow, spray with Activator 7471™ or 7649™ and let dry.
- Apply: Apply the adhesive thoroughly to the contact surfaces. For slip-fitted assemblies, apply around the leading edge of the pin and the inside of the collar. For press or shrink fits, coat the bonding surfaces thoroughly.
- Assemble: Assemble parts using a rotating motion for slip fits to ensure good coverage, or install at high press rates for press fits. The anaerobic formula will begin curing once confined in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces. Leave undisturbed until handling strength is achieved.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Loctite 660 used for?
Loctite 660 is a high-strength, high-viscosity anaerobic retaining paste designed for repairing and bonding cylindrical fitting parts. It is specifically formulated to restore worn shafts, spun bearings, damaged keyways, and loose-fitting machinery parts without the need for expensive remachining.
Can Loctite 660 be disassembled?
Yes, though it creates a permanent bond under normal conditions. To disassemble, apply localized heat directly to the assembly to approximately 250°C (482°F) and separate the parts while hot. Any cured residual product can be cleaned using a combination of a Loctite solvent and mechanical abrasion (such as a wire brush).
Does Loctite 660 work on plastics or non-metal surfaces?
No. Loctite 660 is an anaerobic adhesive that requires both the presence of metal ions and the absence of air to cure. It is not recommended for use on plastics (especially thermoplastic materials where stress cracking could result).
Is Loctite 660 safe for use in food processing facilities?
Loctite 660 is registered to NSF Category P1, making it acceptable for use as a sealant in and around food processing areas provided there is no possibility of direct food contact. It is not recommended for use in pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or strong oxidizing materials like chlorine.
